Taking care of a dog in their golden years could be difficult for some people, yet this fur mom from Louisiana willingly took on the challenge. Not only did she shower her three old pups with affection, but she also went out of her way to make their lives easier with a DIY doggy escalator.
Sonya Karimi, hailing from New Orleans in Louisiana, had always had a soft spot for rescue dogs, especially the smaller ones. So for the past years, she had frequently visited their local shelter looking for abandoned pups. That was where she met 13-year-old George, ten-year-old Bodhi, ten-year-old Sam, and four-year-old Emery.
When she first brought them home, she realized that only Emery was capable of climbing their stairs unassisted. The three older dogs had a hard time doing so, especially Bodhi, who suffered from a torn knee ligament. So in a bid to make them comfy in the house, Sonya thought of making a DIY doggy escalator for her rescue pups.
She already knew the basic operation of stairlifts as she had previously worked with the elderly. That was why after making the wooden structure with her fiancé, Zach, they then asked the help of Zach’s engineer parents to put together the wirings and other technical details.
Within three months, their project was complete. Sonya was a bit hesitant to try it out at first as she worried that the pups might need tons of training to use the stairlift. However, as soon as the canines saw her masterpiece, they were very excited to get on it.
It didn’t take long for the pooches to get used to it, and before Sonya knew it, her three older rescues were using the escalator like a pro. Watch the adorable doggy stairlift in action here.
